I first started this blog after I retired, and posted regularly for a number of years. My posts have been infrequent in the last few years, but today things have changed. We have reached an inflection point in this country, the angle that is too steep for things to remain in a neat pile.
I attended a march yesterday that was a memorial march in honor of Renee Good, who was killed by an ICE Agent on January 7, 2026. At the march, news reporters were interviewing people, asking them why do you march. I thought about how I would answer that question, and felt compelled to write my answer:
Why we march.
Because we are at an inflection point
Because we could lose the critical things about us that we take for granted.
Because our country
has gone from a bastion of freedom to an oligarchy of oppression with
jackbooted thugs, backed by the federal government, attacking our cities,
ingoring our constitution, brutalizing citizens, murdering them, and acting
beyond the scope of their charter as an organization.
A senator is being threatened by the president, who is
abusing his power so rar with little checks from congress, to line his pockets
and satisfy megalomaniac needs.
The true colors of the MAGA cult are there for the world to see. The question is, as the world watches, as countries like Canada and Denmark prepare to defend themselves in case we attach them, …the question is, can We The People do it again. Can we find the courage to stand up to tyranny, can we find a Lincoln to lead us, can we find a way to unite a splintered majority and stop the destruction of our democracy.
I ask myself what can I, a 75 year old woman with and aged aching body, do that will make any
difference?
- Not much is my answer to myself, but with the millions of people who feel the same, that little bit can add up to a lot
- Speak out – for years I have avoided conversations about politics to peacefully exist among MAGA. That stops. Those who can continue to support MAGA are not of the moral character and intellect that I want to be around.
- Contact federal and State representatives. That has had some effect because one of my Senators, Fetterman, recently changed his vote back from the MAGA side.
- Encourage others to speak out and to contact their representatives.
- Exercise my right to peaceful assembly and visibly protest, even if it is just holding a sign at an intersection.
- Be willing to offer shelter and aid to those who are threatened by our unjustly, unconstitutionally threatened by our government.
For anyone who has ever wondered what average Germans were
doing as Hitler and his thugs were destroying their own democracy, before they
attempted to conquer the world, I tell you WE ARE THERE NOW, here in America.
In ten years will we look back and say that is where We The
People stood up and stopped it..
Or will they say that is when We The People, looked away,
hunkered down, or worse participated, and lost our 250 year experiment in
freedom.
